CHAPTER 60

After finding Cain down in the bomb shelter and sending him to Patrick, Molly had found herself walking through one of the tunnel exits that led farther into the park. She just needed a moment to not be near anyone.

Patrick was Abel.

Shaking her head, Molly ran her hand over her mouth. Stress and worry roared through her. How did I know that?

She had no answer for that. The same way she didn’t understand why she’d known that Ezekiel was Eve with a bone-deep certainty.

Or how she’d saved Jake.

Eve’s words rolled through Molly’s mind. All you have to do is remember. But once again, she shied away from them. She didn’t want to remember. She didn’t want to know how it was that she knew who Ezekiel and Patrick really were. She didn’t want to know how she fit into this larger, horrible story.

Because something else she knew with unerring certainty was that there was a lot of pain coming. People were going to die. Molly didn’t want to be one of those people. And she also didn’t want to watch her family and friends die either. And she certainly didn’t want to be in the middle of all of this.

And she had the distinct impression that once she remembered, there was no going back.

It’s already too late for that, a voice whispered from the back edges of her mind.

And Molly knew that was true. She was in this up to her eyeballs. She reached the end of the tunnel and inputted the code, slipping outside and then closing the door behind her, making sure it was locked. She breathed in the fresh air and stared up at the sky. Right here, right now, she was alone.

The closest people were back at the estate, which was a mile away. And beyond that, they were miles and miles from the closest town.

And yet, Molly knew it wasn’t far enough away. She wanted to run and never stop. She wanted to run until no one could find her. She didn’t want to know what destiny wanted with her. She didn’t want to know why she was supposed to be in the middle of all of this.

All she wanted was a normal life, a simple life. She wanted to spend time with her family and maybe create a family of her own someday.

An image of JW slipped through her mind. Tears pressed against the back of her eyes. Whatever she felt for JW, this was certainly not the time. She couldn’t pull him into the chaos that surrounded her.

And there would be no chance for the two of them in her future. Because she knew without a shred of doubt that the chaos surrounding her was only going to grow.
